We'd had enough of the traffic and road confusion around SLC, so after lunch we decided to take a scenic drive up Ogden Canyon which is closer and a much less crowded area. What little traffic we encountered looked like it was probably people leaving their holiday weekend destinations.
Heading east from Ogden into Ogden Canyon through the Wasatch Mountains. These are the mountains we see from our campground that run along the east side of the valley down past Salt Lake City. The range stretches south 160 miles from the Utah/Idaho border.
The canyon narrows......
Here are more pipes going through the rock....
And, finally, the source of the water which must be running through the pipes....Pineview Reservoir at the top of the canyon.
We made a circle around the reservoir through the tiny villages of Eden and Huntsville. I don't know what to call them other than villages.....they certainly aren't big enough to be towns. There are numerous beautiful houses around the area so it must be a big vacation and second-home location.
Pineview Reservoir is in a long valley in the Wasatch Range, at least 1,000 feet higher than Ogden. Going south along the valley to return by a different route was stunning. Here the road snakes up to get over the higher pass to the south.
The road passes the Snow Basin Resort ski area which has numerous trails cut down the slopes. Utah has lots of very popular ski areas which draw numerous sports enthusiasts during the winter.
Another of the beautiful Wasatch views just past Snow Basin.
Down the valley with the road descending to connect with I-84 which crosses the Wasatch and ends at I-80 some miles to the east. This is one of the most beautiful areas we've seen. We thoroughly enjoyed our drive through it today.
Sunset east over the Wasatch Range this evening. These mountains often look as if they'd been painted on a background.
Sunset to the southwest with a bit of the lake showing and lots of purple mountains. There are electric lines all over the place so it's impossible to get a picture without them.
One more of a sunset view to the west.
Tomorrow we plan to go to Antelope State Park which is about ten miles west of the campground. It's a good place to get a better look at the Great Salt Lake.
