Don’t know what happened with the embedded photos in
yesterday’s email…..on some they were added as attachments and on others they
were in the right places within the email. We’ll see if this one turns
out better.
This was a four-state day……Kentucky, Ohio (by a sliver),
Indiana and Illinois. It was longer and more tiring than one would expect
for 315 miles. Fortunately we got an early start because ten miles down
the road the check-engine light came on. We stopped at a Chevy dealer
right off the interstate and found out it was the fault of the tuning kit which
hadn’t figured out we were at a much lower elevation than when we started out.
It should have reset itself when the truck was turned off but it didn’t.
It cost us about 45 minutes of fiddling around with re-tuning to get it working
right. (Should have taken much less but we’re still not too sure of what
we’re doing with this thing.) One might think this has all been way more
trouble than it’s worth (never mind the cost) but so far it’s improved our
mileage by about 30% (from 10 to 13 ½) which is not insignificant. It’s
not as good as Jim hoped but it may get better.
Piles Chevrolet, Dry Ridge, KY. Not a place one wants
to be on a trip but it was a very nice dealership with a super service adviser
who got us straightened out and on our way at no charge.
The mighty Ohio River from the I-275 bridge going from
Kentucky to Indiana. One of the biggest and most important rivers in the
country. Power plants in sight in both directions.
Heading into the stormy weather
which was hammering the mid-west today. This is not what RVers want to be
going into…..forecasts of heavy rain, hail and possible tornadoes. It was
a lot worse than this picture looks.
The drive turned out to be uneventful except for the very
heavy rain we hit around Indianapolis. At times it was so heavy we
couldn’t see the lane markers let alone the signs. Several times we
nearly got trapped in exit-only lanes going somewhere unknown and
unwanted.
It was actually much worse than this looks.
After we got away from Indianapolis the traffic got much
lighter and there were only a couple of patches of heavy rain. By the
time we got to our campground it was dry and the storms were splitting and
going north and south of this area.
The campground is called Tin Cup RV Park and I’d been
wondering what it had to do with golf. Turns out the campground includes
a driving range which answers the question of the name. It’s nice and
quiet with lots of grass and trees. Much better than the usual
shove-‘em-in-with-a-shoe-horn places we usually see for over-nighters.
Our site with the driving range right next to it.
Lovely view.
The cats did much better today. Neither of them
complained at all although Gwen did manage to cause a lot of trouble this
morning when she hid in the back of the hide-a-bed couch. She squeezed
between the pull-out drawer and the wire frame mattress base at the back.
Jim tried to pull her out but couldn’t get her through the wire grate. He
ended up turning the couch up on its front and she came out with a parting shot
of a hard bite on his hand. If she gets in there again we’ll get Mr. No
(spray bottle with water). In the future I’ll try to get her in her
carrier before she realizes we’re leaving again.
Tomorrow will be another 300+ mile drive to Kellogg, Iowa,
slightly east of Des Moines. Only two states though……they’re getting
bigger.
