I haven't posted anything for the past two days because nothing's going on. There is absolutely nothing to do in this area other than relax, read and fish. A great way to spend a week.
On Thursday Jim was fishing in the inlet and caught this nice northern pike. He's doing strictly catch-and-release so it was this fish's lucky day. If our neighbor had caught him he would have been dinner.
We've got inflatable boats....I have a kayak and Jim has a fishing pontoon, but the weather hasn't been good for boating....heavily overcast and windy. Yesterday we tried going out in the boats but the wind made fishing too difficult. It wasn't too bad in my kayak but Jim got really tired of trying to fish and fight the wind at the same time so we quit after a couple of hours.
Today's weather was supposed to be better but it didn't turn out that way. The wind is even worse. The people who were here when we arrived said it's been like this all spring and they've had enough of it. After seven weeks here they're giving up and going home next week.
No matter what the weather does we're enjoying the beauty of this place. There aren't as many birds as we thought there would be but I was very lucky to see an osprey catch a large fish and take off for its nest which is nearby. The fish was so big the bird nearly couldn't get airborne again. We also have a beaver and a muskrat at the water's edge. I got a picture of the muskrat out in the water but it looks like a log in the picture so I won't post it.
There are now eleven campers here but it's still really quiet. Our very nice new neighbors in the next site are here from the Soo with their four well-behaved dogs. One of the dogs reminds us of Melee (our granddog), obsessed with retrieving sticks (dog-toy sticks, not real ones since she impaled herself on one). Hank is the lead singer in Hwy 63, the band which is providing the live music for DeTour's July 4th festivities. They do Classic Rock so we're looking forward to hearing them.
Today we drove 30 miles east to Cedarville to see what was there. Not much. They do have a bigger grocery store so we were able to get soymilk which can't be found in DeTour, and a hardware store where Jim was able to get a few more lures to tempt whatever fish might be around. We also found a restaurant where we got very good whitefish for lunch (and my leftovers for dinner). It was a lovely drive and a good outing after not leaving the campground since Wednesday.
We brought back a real treasure for Gwen....a paper grocery bag. After she was through with hiding inside she mashed it into a bed. She's lucky she didn't fall off the table when she was inside it. It might be noted that at almost six years of age she is no longer a small cat. Her kittenish figure has become distinctly blimp-like, rather like she swallowed a cantaloupe.
I chose this out-of-the-way campground to avoid the noise of fireworks but it's already started (although not in the campground where they aren't allowed). Today is Canada Day, the 150th birthday of Canada, so we may be hearing fireworks from across the water. Perhaps there are fireworks of a different kind going on across Canada after Justin Trudeau mentioned every Canadian province except Alberta in his Canada Day speech today. One unintentional omission and an entire province has taken umbrage. Oops.
Keeping our fingers crossed for less wind tomorrow.
