When we set off for the southwest on 2/1/2015, I hadn't yet thought of doing a blog. As a result, I took very few pictures on our way to Terlingua.
Lake Douglas, between Newport and Sevierville, TN. The lake was created by damming the French Broad River on its way from Rosman, NC, to its confluence with the Holston River near Knoxville, at which point the two rivers become the Tennessee River.
The drive south from I-40 to Gadsden, Alabama, was beautiful and I have no idea why I didn't take pictures along the way other than that it was raining the whole way. From our first night in Gadsden, we went to Vicksburg, MS, which was another attractive drive. From Vicksburg we drove across Louisiana and into Texas where we spent our third night in Corsicana. The further west we got from Louisiana, the flatter, dryer and more unattractive the countryside became. By the time of our fourth night in San Angelo, it was hot, dry, dusty and windy.
Desolate landscape at Rankin, between San Angelo and Fort Stockton, Texas. This is the beginning of oil country where pump jacks start popping up.
Between Fort Stockton and Alpine where mountains start appearing.
Big Bend's mountains, southeast of Terlingua at dusk.
Terlingua sunset.
Maverick Mountain at dusk, just north of Terlingua, taken at our campground.
